Coconut is one of the three major plantation cros grown in Sri Lanka covering all districts of the country. Coconut covers an extent of 394,386 hectares and comes second to rice. Major coconut growing areas are the Western, North Western and Southern province. Kurunegala and Puttalam districts of the North Western province and Gampaha district (part of Western province) comprise 56,42% of the total coconut growing areas of the country and is known as the “Coconut Triangle” The rest of the area (43.58%) covers the Southern province and several areas of the Eastern and Northern provinces.
