The increase of human population and depletion of forest cover in Sri Lanka are shown in the graph which is not scaled evenly. Between 1956 and 1992, the average depletion of forest was 40 000 ha. per year mainly for the purpose of Mahaweli, Kirindi Oya and Pelwatta schemes.
