Principals awareness on G.C.E. (A/L) Technology Stream

Hon. Minister of Education expressed that all the arrangements have been made to begin the technical subject stream for General Certificate of Education, Advanced Level and it will be started in schools on 15 June 2013.

Awareness program for the principals of 200 schools where this new subject stream is started was held in the auditorium of the Ministry on 03.06.2013 and there, the minister stated this.

The minister said that through the study of this new subject stream, in addition to the students entering the universities by 2016, another 10000 students will be able to follow job oriented courses. The schools in which this new technology subject stream is scheduled to be started have been selected covering all the electorates and they will be improved as 1AB superb schools, the minister pointed out. At the examination of this technology subject stream, out of 100 marks 75 marks will be allocated for the written test and the remaining 25 marks will be allocated to the practical test. The minister instructed the principals to sensitize the students about the study of this subject as it provides opportunities for the students to develop their skills according to their own talents because of the addition of practical knowledge.

Either engineering technology or bio diversification technology should be selected. Science has been introduced to Technology as another main subject which is compulsory.  Third subject can be selected from the 10 commerce and art subjects prescribed, the minister pointed out. Science and technology faculties will be created within the universities by 2016 for the students who study this subject and qualify for the university entrance and a new degree called “Bachelor of Technology” (B tech) will be awarded, the minister further stated.
