Apparatus are arranged as in the diagram keeping all the factors identical except the concentration of an acid by adding 2 drops of a hydrochloric acid solution to one test tube and 4 drops of the same solution to the other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/astan.lk\/al_virtualclassroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/exp1-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10498\" src=\"http:\/\/astan.lk\/al_virtualclassroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/exp1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Gas bubbles evolve faster in the test tube containing acid in higher concentration.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It can be concluded that concentration affects the rate of a reaction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Experiment II : Effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction.<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Apparatus are set as shown in the diagram keeping all the factors identical except<br \/>\ntemperature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/astan.lk\/al_virtualclassroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/exp2-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10502\" src=\"http:\/\/astan.lk\/al_virtualclassroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/exp2-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It can be seen that the solution kept at higher temperature decolourizes faster.<br \/>\n\u2022 Therefore, temperature affects the rate of a reaction.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Experiment III : Effect of the physical nature (surface area) of reactants on the rate of<br \/>\na reaction.<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 To two test tubes separately add a lump of CaCO<sub>3<\/sub> and CaCO<sub>3<\/sub> powder of equal mass.<br \/>\n\u2022 To each test tube, add equal volumes of a HCl solution of the same concentration (e.g.0.01 mol dm<sup>-3<\/sup>)<br \/>\n\u2022 Keep both tubes in a water bath.<br \/>\n\u2022 Observe the difference in the rates of evolution of gas.<br \/>\n\u2022 Emphasize the need to immerse in a water bath.<br \/>\n\u2022 It can be observed that the tube containing CaCO<sub>3<\/sub> powder effervesces faster.<br \/>\n\u2022 Thus, it can be concluded that the physical nature of reactants affects the rate of a reaction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Experiment IV : Effect of catalysts on the rate of a reaction<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Add 10.0 cm<sup>3<\/sup> samples of &#8217;20 volume&#8217; H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub> to two boiling tubes. (&#8217;20 volume&#8217; means that unit volume of H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub> solution gives twenty volumes of O<sub>2<\/sub> at STP)<br \/>\n\u2022 Add 5.0 cm<sup>-3<\/sup> of water to one tube and 5.0 cm<sup>3<\/sup> of 0.1 mol dm<sup>-3<\/sup> NaOH to the other.<br \/>\n\u2022 It is seen that gas bubbles evolve faster in the tube with NaOH.<br \/>\n\u2022 This leads to the conclusion that NaOH increases the rate of decomposition of H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>(a) Homogeneous catalysts : If the catalyst and the reactants are in the same phase, they are called homogeneous catalysts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.expertsmind.com\/CMSImages\/1396_types%20of%20catalysis1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(b) Heterogeneous catalysts : If the catalyst and the reactants are in different phases, they are heterogeneous catalysts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chemguide.co.uk\/physical\/catalysis\/ethh2eqn.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chemguide.co.uk\/physical\/catalysis\/contact1.gif\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 Rate of a reaction can be defined as the change of concentration (either decrease of concentration of reactants or increase of concentration in products) within a unit time. \u2022 Factors affecting rate of reactions &#8211;
