The amount of CaCO<sub>3<\/sub> used is dependent on the amount of silicate materials in the ore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/notes.tyrocity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron.png\" width=\"260\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Hot air is blown in at the bottom. Coke burns producing heat and CO.<\/p>\n<p>C(s) + O<sub>2<\/sub>(g)\u00a0\u2192 CO<sub>2<\/sub>(g) \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub>(g) + C(s)\u00a0\u2192 CO(g)<br \/>\n\u2022 The temperature at the point where air enters is at about 2000 K and at the top is about 700 K.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The iron(III) oxide is reduced to iron mainly by CO and some by carbon.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The molten iron containing 3-4% dissolved carbon forms pig iron. Melting point of the pure iron is 1535 \u00b0C but the melting point of pig iron is at about 1015 \u00b0C, due to the presence of impurities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 CaCO<sub>3<\/sub> decomposes to CaO and CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas. CaO reacts with silicate impurities and forms slag (CaSiO<sub>3<\/sub>). Slag is also molten and floats on molten iron into the bottom.
