So the respiratory surfaces must have the following properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>It must be permeable to respiratory gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.<\/li>\n<li>It must be moist\/wet. Because dissolved oxygen will diffuse through the respiratory surface.<\/li>\n<li>It must be thin, short distance, therefore diffusion will be efficient.<\/li>\n<li>It must possess a large area to allow sufficient volume gases to be exchanged according to organisms need.<\/li>\n<li>It should possess good supply of blood .because blood will remove oxygen from the respiratory surface thus maintaining oxygen concentration gradient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a huge diversity in respiratory organs in the animal kingdom.<\/li>\n<li>Organisms require oxygen either direct from the atmosphere or from the dissolved O<sub>2<\/sub> in water.<\/li>\n<li>There are number of differences in the O<sub>2<\/sub> content in the air and water.\n<ul>\n<li>Atmosphere-21%<\/li>\n<li>Water-0.8%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diversity of respiratory structures in the animal kingdom.
