Co-operatives are defined by the International Co-operative Association as follows. \u201cAn autonomous association of persons, united voluntary to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations, through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Several characteristics of co-operatives are given below <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 An independent organization<\/p>\n

\u2022 A group of voluntarily gathered individuals<\/p>\n

\u2022 Collective ownership of members<\/p>\n

\u2022 Having common needs and objectives<\/p>\n

\u2022 A business with democratic control<\/p>\n

Several advantages of co-operatives are given below<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Has democratic control<\/p>\n

\u2022 Provides essential goods and services at fair prices<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ability to do business in various fields.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Mutual co-operation<\/p>\n

Several disadvantages of co-operatives are given below<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Limited sources of funds<\/p>\n

\u2022 Business activities have to be done according to co-operative policies<\/p>\n

Co-operative societies are registered through the commissioner of Co-operative Development of the Co-operative Development Department under the co-operative development commissioner of the provincial council<\/em><\/p>\n

The following documents should be submitted to the commissioner of co-operative development to register a co-operative society<\/p>\n

\u2022 An application form<\/p>\n

\u2022 Two copies of the interim constitution<\/p>\n

\u2022 The feasibility report of proposed economic activities<\/p>\n

. \u2022 The report of the annual general meeting at which the proposal to register the co-operative society was approved.<\/p>\n

\u2022 A certificate from the working committee stating that the members who to signed the application had paid than membership fees and that the money is under the trust of the working committee.<\/p>\n

\u2022 A map giving directions to the location of the society.<\/p>\n

The following are the milestones of the evolution of the co-operative movement<\/strong><\/p>\n

1912 – Start of lending co-operatives<\/p>\n

1942 – Extablisment of consumer co-operative societies.<\/p>\n

1947 – Extablisment of the co-operative societies for agriculture production and distribution<\/p>\n

1957 – Start of multi purpose co-operative societies<\/p>\n

1971 – Restructuring of co-operatives<\/p>\n

1992 – Amendment of co-operative societies
\nPolicies of the co-operative movement <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Voluntary and open membership<\/p>\n

\u2022 Democratic member control<\/p>\n

\u2022 Social economic participation<\/p>\n

\u2022 Autonomy and independence<\/p>\n

\u2022 Co-operative education training and information<\/p>\n

\u2022 Co-operation among local, national and international co-operatives<\/p>\n

\u2022 Concern for society<\/p>\n

Co-operative societies contribute to the economic development of the country in various ways. <\/em><\/p>\n

Eg. Increasing the employment contributing to the national production through multi purpose co-operative socialities, manufacturing co-operative societies, Thrift credit co-operative societies and industrial co-operative societies<\/p>\n

New trends can be seen in the co-operative movement within the current complex and competitive economy<\/em><\/p>\n
